Frank Bisignano, the commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), confidently stated that the Social Security program is set to endure another 90 years. During an appearance on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box,’ he highlighted the program’s long-standing history and its continued relevance. Bisignano’s remarks come as the SSA prepares to announce its annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), following the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) release of September inflation data measured by the consumer price index (CPI).
This year’s adjustment saw a 2.8 percent increase in benefits for approximately 75 million Social Security recipients. Looking ahead, the Senior Citizens League predicts a 3.5 percent COLA for 2027, expected to be the fourth-highest increase since 2008. Consequently, the average monthly Social Security benefit check is set to rise from $1,941.76 to $2,009.72, based on August data from the SSA. Bisignano underlined the significance of these annual adjustments, noting that recipients are appreciative and anticipate them.
Despite these assurances, earlier statements from Bisignano and other officials from the Trump administration pointed to a potential shortfall in Social Security’s Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund. They anticipated it would only cover 78 percent of scheduled benefits by the early 2030s.
