Debate Over Transgender Athletes in High School Sports
In Arlington, Washington, tension filled the air at the Nike Hole in the Wall High School XC Invitational, particularly around the Women’s Elite 5K race. A Camas High School runner, who transitioned from the boys’ to the girls’ cross country team midseason, competed in the event. This shift has sparked national attention and debate due to the runner’s previous participation in boys’ competitions earlier in the year.
This athlete, beginning the year on the boys’ team, switched to the girls’ team and has since excelled, taking first place in a varsity meet. Such a transition under the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) rules has raised concerns among parents and spectators, with some expressing their dissatisfaction openly.
A parent remarked, “In competitions, everything needs to be fair, like stock car racing.”
Despite the support of some attendees, many parents resist the idea of transgender female athletes competing alongside cisgender females. They argue the potential for these athletes to displace opportunities for others. A mother voiced her worries, “We have daughters, and it’s robbing them of an opportunity to compete.”
The Camas runner finished 39th out of 135 in the race, notably below his counterparts in the male category. Yet, the larger debate concerns fairness rather than individual performance, a sentiment echoed by parents and other attendees who shared their viewpoints, many choosing to remain anonymous.
Not all were against this inclusion. Some attendees emphasized empathy and understanding, focusing on sports building confidence for student-athletes rather than solely on competition outcomes. Kevin Ess, an Arlington High parent, reflected on the history and traditional gender separation in sports, stating his belief in maintaining distinct male and female competitions.
Related to this discussion, the initiative to ban biological males from competing in girls’ sports, Initiative 638, is set to appear on the November ballot, driven by local efforts to uphold traditional competition norms. Some attendees saw the events in Camas as pivotal moments that could influence legislative changes through public voting.
As the situation fuels further debate, many parents urge community involvement to address disparities they associate with transgender participation in school sports. One mother conveyed her hope for legislative change and voter engagement.
