The Tampa Bay Rays’ bullpen faltered late Monday night, allowing the Cleveland Guardians to secure a 7-3 victory in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS). Cleveland’s late offensive surge included scoring five runs over the last two innings at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
José Ramírez and Chase DeLauter were key contributors, celebrating their runs in the eighth inning which solidified the Guardians’ lead. The Rays initially struck first. In the opening inning, with two outs, Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca delivered consecutive RBI singles, granting Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen maintained this advantage through five innings, achieving seven strikeouts.
Cleveland found its momentum against Rasmussen in the sixth. Chase DeLauter hit a solo home run, sending the ball to right-center and putting Cleveland on the board. Cleveland’s Patrick Bailey equalized the score in the seventh, hitting a solo shot to right that ended Rasmussen’s performance with the score tied at 2-2.
The Guardians continued their offensive drive in the eighth inning. José Ramírez initiated with an infield single, followed by DeLauter doubling down the line. Nathaniel Lowe’s two-run single gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead. Tampa Bay responded in the bottom of the eighth when pinch-hitter Cedric Mullins launched a solo home run, narrowing the deficit to 4-3.
Ramírez sealed Cleveland’s victory with another RBI single in the ninth off Cole Sulser. After Sulser walked DeLauter, Kevin Kelly faced Jo Adell, who hit a two-run double, widening the gap to 7-3. The Guardians amassed 14 hits in the game, overpowering the efforts of six Tampa Bay pitchers. Ramírez and DeLauter collectively tallied six hits, ensuring Cleveland’s dominance.
Despite entering the game with momentum from sweeping the Yankees, Tampa Bay now faces increased pressure heading into Game 2 at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night.
