White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Debuts Amid Criticism
Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary, spoke positively about President Donald Trump’s rally held in Youngstown, Ohio, and laid out plans for his future campaign events. During her initial briefing in this position, Zacharia emphasized the economic data, contrasting Trump’s achievements on wages with those of former President Joe Biden.
Following her debut, New York’s Democratic Governor, Kathy Hochul, appeared to mock Zacharia’s introduction by sharing an image of NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers from a recent Jets game. Rodgers was depicted entering the game prior to suffering a season-ending injury. The governor’s press office tweeted the image alongside an announcement about Zacharia’s debut, but with no written explanation.
The photo, showing Rodgers carrying an American flag, was from his first regular season appearance with the Jets on September 11, 2023, coinciding with the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, his anticipated debut ended abruptly after he tore his Achilles tendon.
Media outlet OutKick reached out to Governor Hochul’s office to inquire about the analogy between Zacharia’s debut and Rodgers’ injury, though the office did not provide a clear explanation.
Hochul’s press office has previously been involved in controversy, following the 2025 resignation of her then-press secretary, Avi Small, amid sexual harassment allegations. The investigation concluded without a public disclosure of its findings.
Katie Zacharia replaced Karoline Leavitt, appointed by President Trump. Her first press briefing lasted 14 minutes, during which she directed questions about Trump to the President himself prior to his Alaska trip. Trump later expressed approval of her performance.
The White House acknowledged Zacharia’s debut, noting her dedication to promoting Trump’s policies and her role in maintaining the administration’s new-media presence.
Governor Hochul’s social media presence has been known for its confrontational tone as part of her communication strategy, particularly in response to critiques from the Trump administration.
