Kelly Clarkson’s recent conflict with a Brooklyn shop has caused more than a lost sale. Art of Play’s co-owner, Adam Rubin, expressed concern about his business’s safety after their disagreement went viral.
But I am afraid for the safety of our shop. Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger,
Rubin told Fox News Digital.
Rubin described facing backlash beyond online comments, including threats and personal information exposure involving people connected with the business.
We’ve got incredible support from our neighbors and fans over the past few days, and all of them have been attacked, threatened, doxed,
he said.
Rubin accused Clarkson of abusing her celebrity status, highlighting the influence it has in amplifying issues for small businesses.
You can’t just try to squash somebody like a bug and expect everybody to give you a pass,
he argued.
The dispute originates from a mechanical bird, initially priced at $15,000, now marked at $15 million. Clarkson’s public grievance with the store stemmed from her perception that she received ‘Pretty Woman’ like treatment, feeling judged on her ability to afford merchandise.
The shop explained that the original price tag referred to a similar bird, while Molly, the featured bird, was a fixture in their magic shows.
Rubin indicated the drastic price change was driven by publicity, stating Molly is one of the most famous mechanical birds due to the attention from Clarkson’s visit.
Clarkson described her experience on social media, expressing shock over the employee’s attitude, believing they suggested she couldn’t afford the items.
Art of Play responded, explaining Molly wasn’t available for sale, and mentioned the conversation resulted from miscommunication.
The business noted a similar bird, priced around $2,000, was on offer. Rubin conveyed concern over the impact on his business, especially post a medical procedure removing cancer.
Rubin emphasized Art of Play’s purpose as a place of curiosity and inspiration, featuring spinning tops, puzzles, and magic performances within its premises.
Despite the exchange, Rubin said Clarkson remains welcome at the shop, expressing hopes to resolve the misunderstanding.
