San Francisco — An employee from OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, was detained by the FBI after a listening device was found in their office. The device was described as ‘sophisticated’ and was located in an executive conference room.
The suspect, Abdulrahman Alfozan, is a 35-year-old from Saudi Arabia. Alfozan has been with OpenAI since July 2025. He was taken into custody on October 9 and later appeared in federal court. He faces charges for the alleged use of a listening device to ‘intercept oral communications,’ according to a statement by the Justice Department.
The discovery of the recording equipment has raised concerns about privacy and security protocols within high-tech companies. This incident underscores the need for stringent measures to safeguard sensitive information from unauthorized interception.
