The Justice Department has initiated a major crackdown on tax fraud across the United States, announcing measures against 76 individuals linked to over $490 million in projected tax losses. This operation, the first of its kind, resulted in fresh charges against 31 individuals accused of defrauding American taxpayers.
This National Tax Enforcement Surge involved collaboration between 35 U.S. attorneys’ offices and IRS criminal investigators over a period of approximately six weeks. The initiative led to 23 new cases about more than $350 million in alleged tax losses. Additionally, 45 other individuals faced trials, guilty pleas, and sentencing involving nearly $140 million in estimated tax losses.
Every dollar stolen through tax fraud is a dollar taken from the American people.– Attorney General Todd Blanche
Attorney General Todd Blanche underscored the importance of this operation in a news release, declaring that the surge exposed substantial fraud schemes. He emphasized the department’s commitment to further unravel schemes attempting to side-step accountability.
IRS Criminal Investigation chief Jarod Koopman characterized the operation as an innovative enforcement strategy. Collaborating with the DOJ, this approach aims to concentrate resources on diverse tax crimes, with promises of future actions of similar nature.
Some prominent cases include an alleged fraudulent trust scheme in Texas, where four defendants reportedly promoted tax shelters that disguised over $1.5 billion in income, resulting in $200 million in expected tax losses. In Georgia, three Mexican nationals were indicted for a $74 million tax refund scheme involving over 16,000 U.S. Treasury checks, utilizing Mexican identification documents to file fraudulent returns.
Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald highlighted ongoing efforts to retrieve assets obtained through fraud, despite some fraudulent proceeds being spent prior to recovery efforts. He revealed the Justice Department is assembling a team focused on asset forfeiture and recovery.
This operation follows the establishment of the National Fraud Enforcement Division by the Justice Department in April. Accused individuals maintain their innocence until proven guilty, affirming the principle of justice.
