Authorities in Orlando, Florida, have announced the arrest of a man on murder charges related to the disappearance of his ex-fiancée nearly 15 years ago. Michelle Parker went missing on November 17, 2011, the same day an episode of ‘The People’s Court’ aired featuring her and Dale Smith Jr. in a dispute over an engagement ring.
The Orlando Police Department confirmed the arrest of Smith on Wednesday, charging him with second-degree murder. This development comes after Parker’s SUV was found abandoned shortly after she disappeared, although she has never been located. Parker and Smith share two children.
In a press conference, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith stated that Smith Jr. was the last known person to be in contact with Parker on the day she vanished, after she had dropped their children off at his home. Chief Smith noted that the investigation has broadened over the past year, allowing the department to reevaluate all evidence with renewed focus.
‘We reexamined testimony and conflicting statements made by the suspect and used advanced digital forensics to uncover and analyze additional evidence,’ Chief Smith explained.
Orlando police detective Phillip McMican mentioned that Smith has been interviewed multiple times in relation to the case and participated in various depositions that contributed to the investigation.
‘Very specific questions were asked of him numerous times over the years, where he gave different answers to those same questions,’ McMican said.
McMican highlighted advancements in forensic technology as crucial for better analysis of evidence, such as vehicles and electronic devices, compared to technology available 15 years ago. Although specific details prompting Smith’s arrest have not been disclosed, the police maintain that all evidence points to Smith Jr. as the culprit behind Parker’s disappearance.
According to CBS affiliate WKMG-TV, Parker was seen on security footage dropping her children off at Smith Jr.’s residence the night she disappeared. Her vehicle was discovered abandoned the following day in an Orlando parking lot. In December 2011, her cellphone was recovered by divers in a nearby lake. Smith Jr. had been a suspect since early in the investigation.
