President Trump has a reputation for making promises that do not often align with reality. He won two elections by persuading many voters to believe in his exaggerated claims. However, as early voting starts for the midterms, Americans are becoming more aware of his issues with honesty, self-interest, and governance.
Many now acknowledge the impact of Trump’s tariffs and his extended conflict with Iran. These policies have contributed to increased prices for fuel, groceries, and more. Polls reflect widespread disapproval. An Associated Press-NORC poll published on October 1 reported that 71% of adult Americans are dissatisfied with Trump’s war efforts. Additionally, 65% attribute the affordability crisis to his policies. The New York Times poll average indicates less than 40% approval of Trump’s overall performance.
Despite this, Trump refuses to accept these facts. On October 1, he dismissed concerns about high prices, claiming he is achieving unprecedented economic figures. He argues that the only shortcoming is in public relations. When confronted about low poll numbers by Time Magazine, Trump dismissed them as fake, labeling pollsters as corrupt. While polling accuracy varies, reputable pollsters aim for precision and do not intentionally distort their findings.
Trump regularly describes unfavorable outcomes as “fake” or “a hoax.” Yet, experts highlight his role in spreading falsehoods. CNN’s Daniel Dale documented over 8,500 false claims made by Trump since September 2016. The Washington Post found 30,573 misleading statements in Trump’s first term, with a peak of 503 in a day before the 2020 election. During his 2024 campaign, Trump made many unfulfilled promises, such as halving home costs and cutting gasoline prices to under $2 per gallon. He claimed he would lower interest rates, resolve Russia’s conflict with Ukraine swiftly, and address all issues.
An Economist-YouGov poll in September revealed only 21% of Americans believe Trump will fulfill his promise to give each adult $5,000 if Republicans maintain control of Congress. Another poll in August noted that 50% expect the Iran conflict to last a year or more, contradicting Trump’s assurances of a quick resolution.
Trump’s actions have negatively impacted Americans. His policies have exacerbated issues concerning tariffs, healthcare, immigration, and more. His tax cuts have favored the wealthy, and rollbacks on diversity initiatives have been criticized. Additionally, his stance on freedom of the press and voting rights has drawn concern.
For many, such a track record would result in termination from most positions, but Trump seeks continued Republican majority in Congress for further implementation of his policies. During his campaigning, he urges voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot.” Many Democrats encourage similar thinking, emphasizing his negative impact and the potential benefits of voting for Democratic candidates.
If Democrats seize control of at least one Congressional chamber, it may lead to accountability for Trump’s actions. Attorney A. Scott Bolden, a NewsNation contributor and former Democratic Party chair, underscores the importance of holding leaders accountable. This is crucial for meaningful change.
