Federal Investigation Intensifies on Rep. Ilhan Omar
Escalating Legal Scrutiny on Rep. Ilhan Omar
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., faces increasing legal challenges as federal investigations delve into her immigration status, financial disclosures, and a recent raid on her residence. Fox News justice correspondent, David Spunt, reports on the Department of Justice issuing subpoenas to Omar’s family members. Former federal prosecutor, Andrew Cherkasky, joins host Harris Faulkner to assess the potential legal and political consequences of these investigations.
DOJ Seizes Cell Phone in Washington Raid
Authorities seized a cell phone from Rep. Ilhan Omar during a raid on her Washington, D.C., home as part of a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. The investigation has led to over a dozen subpoenas to her family members following the raid.
Questions Over Omar’s Immigration Paperwork
Investigators are scrutinizing whether Omar’s family falsified her age upon immigrating to the U.S. in 1995. Omar later became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. The probe focuses on discrepancies between the age listed on her application and her actual birth date.
Omar reportedly became a citizen at age 17, eligible through her father’s naturalization. Questions hit the spotlight after her congressional staff sought changes to her birth year from 1981 to 1982 in historical records.
Homeland Security Investigations Raid
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations raided Rep. Omar’s Washington home early Monday, as confirmed by sources to Fox News Digital.
Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, expressed confidence despite the probe, stating, “My wife came here when she was 12 years old as a child war refugee. No concerns.”
Examining Nur Omar Mohamed’s Documents
Officers are investigating whether statements in the immigration application filed by Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, contained inaccuracies.
Political Accusations and Denial
Omar has denied any misconduct, accusing the Trump administration of politicizing federal law enforcement. Her office stated, “For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back. Those attacks have escalated to a pointless federal raid. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies.”
Additional Investigations Into Financial Disclosures
Beyond the immigration investigation, another inquiry targets Omar’s federal financial disclosures, noted to be unconnected to the raid.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Omar’s office for comment.
