American Airlines Cancels Routes Due to Performance Issues
American Airlines has recently ended flights to three destinations: Santa Maria in California, Tijuana in Mexico, and Doha in Qatar. This move has reduced the available flight options for travelers to these locations.
According to aviation data from Cirium, Santa Maria no longer receives service from a major U.S. legacy airline, while Tijuana has lost its only nonstop U.S. airline route. Simple Flying reported these changes.
The airline announced its exit from routes connecting Phoenix to both Santa Maria and Tijuana. Allegiant Air remains the only airline with commercial service at the Santa Maria airport, offering flights to Las Vegas.
A spokesperson from American Airlines noted that the service decisions were based on the poor performance of these routes.
Following American Airlines’ departure, Qatar Airways now operates the Philadelphia-to-Doha route, providing nonstop service again to these cities. American Airlines had initially suspended this route due to regional tensions but ultimately decided to cancel it permanently due to underperformance, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In August, the airline also ceased its service to Tijuana, again citing performance issues. American Airlines regularly reviews its routes to ensure efficient aircraft use, as stated to AirlineGeeks.
Steven Arroyo, an aviation safety expert, explained that route cancellations are common in the airline industry. If routes do not generate profit, airlines will withdraw them.
Travelers planning to visit the Middle East should be vigilant with their travel plans. Arroyo advised monitoring routes and ticket prices, suggesting that travelers have backup plans in case of potential cancellations.
Travelers are encouraged to check airline websites and secure prices or make alternate arrangements if flight cancellations seem likely.
