Netflix’s ‘Untold’ Documentary Chronicles Fake NFL Player Scam

Netflix has committed to producing an ‘Untold’ documentary focusing on one of sports’ most notorious scams. The film will highlight the deceitful antics of Daejon Love, a 35-year-old man who masqueraded as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, swindling women out of over $1.3 million.

An FBI report outlines Love’s con, involving a false persona, customized helmets, and counterfeit cash, all used to defraud 26 women. The documentary, titled Untold: Wide Deceiver, promises a deep dive into Love’s tactics, featuring interviews with those deceived by his scheme.

Love, alongside his 18-year-old associate Taylor Jamie Chan, utilized dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Facebook Dating to target women in California, Oregon, and Washington. Pretending to be an active 49ers player, Love staged workouts on public beaches wearing replica helmets and pads, contributing to the illusion.

Despite convincing displays, the FBI arrested Love and Chan at a Boise, Idaho airport in August. Love now faces federal charges of conspiracy and wire fraud, with investigators finding numerous victims.

Throughout his deception, Love falsely claimed injuries to rationalize the absence of an active roster listing. Extra details, such as an Instagram account exhibiting 49ers gear and luxury vehicles, supported his fabricated identity as an NFL and real estate investor. An AI-generated Google search result further aided his claim as a player.

Pressuring victims to take high-interest loans for investment, Love redirected funds into luxury goods and vacations, maintaining a facade of prosperity. With no actual investments made, once inquiries about finances arose, Love severed communications.

Currently, Love faces trial starting December 15 and remains in custody without bail, pleading not guilty.
