More than a year ago, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) discovered a group of over 30 Wikipedia editors coordinating to introduce anti-Israel bias and antisemitic narratives. Despite this finding, much of the concerning content remains unedited or active on the online encyclopedia.
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt expressed disappointment over the situation, expecting changes such as the removal of these editors and their biased edits. In 2025, the ADL released the report ‘Editing for Hate,’ highlighting a campaign to manipulate Wikipedia content concerning Israel and Palestine. It also noted pro-Hamas perspectives informing Arabic-language content on related topics.
The 2026 follow-up report by the ADL, ‘Damage Done: Wikipedia Leaves Biased Edits Unchecked Despite Editor Bans,’ found that 91% of edits by banned editors were still visible. The ADL likened the situation to arresting a graffiti artist but leaving the graffiti unchecked.
Case studies like that of the editor known as Iskandar323 demonstrate the ongoing issue. Despite a history of disruptive editing, Iskandar323 made numerous edits to high-traffic pages on topics such as ‘Hamas’ and ‘Gaza war’ after the October 7 attacks in Israel. These edits included moving critical information to less-visible pages, significantly affecting how readers perceive the topics.
According to Greenblatt, these actions aim to drive narratives that demonize Israel and downplay terrorism incidents. The ADL argues that Wikipedia’s trustworthiness is compromised, especially as it plays a significant role in information ecosystems where large language models and search engines rely on it.
The ADL’s 2026 report identified a continuation of biased editing through subtler techniques by 19 active accounts, with some editors from the original 2025 report avoiding sanctions. These include undoing editor changes and slowly rebuilding articles related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
To address these issues, the ADL recommends increased accountability from the Wikimedia Foundation. Proposals include private identity verification for editors on sensitive topics, ending anonymous editing, and establishing a task force to address antisemitic bias.
The ADL also calls for search engines and AI developers to disclose their reliance on Wikipedia, suggesting they consider editorial caveats and develop bias-detection measures. Additionally, they urge policymakers to continue oversight on bias and antisemitism on Wikipedia.
The ADL encourages the public and press to verify information from AI and search results, acknowledging their reliance on Wikipedia’s frameworks, even if not disclosed.
The Wikimedia Foundation has yet to respond to inquiries on this matter. Rachel Wolf, a media and culture reporter, covers these developments for Fox News Digital.
