Florida Senate candidate Angie Nixon has made headlines with her remarks about her Republican opponent, Ashley Moody. During an interview with CNN, Nixon stated her desire for Moody to be imprisoned for alleged misdeeds.
Nixon accused Moody of diverting $10 million from a Medicaid program intended for sick children, using the funds for political purposes. She claimed the money was rerouted into slush funds to defeat ballot initiatives, harming public healthcare.
“Ashley Moody… took $10 million from sick kids… and rerouted that into political slush funds,” Nixon said, expressing frustration over ads spreading misinformation about her views.
Nixon also criticized Moody’s voting record, stating she supported cutting healthcare for over 440,000 Floridians. She emphasized her own commitment to justice by calling for Moody to be jailed.
When questioned by CNN host Kasie Hunt, Nixon affirmed her stance, explaining that her intent is based on what she views as Moody’s harmful actions. She mentioned calling for an investigation if elected as a U.S. senator.
Nixon alleged corruption involving the release of a grand jury report, linking it to Moody’s political allies. She expressed concern about potential consequences for children due to the misappropriation of funds.
Despite Nixon’s accusations, Moody has not faced charges in connection with the controversy and denies wrongdoing.
In response, the RNC spokesperson criticized Nixon for her statements, questioning her intention to jail political opponents while advocating for releasing dangerous criminals.
Nixon’s Democratic primary victory and affiliations with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have piqued interest. Despite her membership in the DSA, Nixon denies being a socialist.
“Ashley Moody knows that I’m not a socialist,” Nixon asserted, emphasizing her support for public housing and healthcare without opposing prisons or law enforcement.
The remarks have intensified the Senate race, bringing national attention to these Florida political dynamics.
