The 2026 WNBA Finals will feature the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries, both seeking their first championship. Each team swept their semifinal opponents, making it the first time in four seasons that neither the New York Liberty nor the Las Vegas Aces are in the finals.
This year’s finals highlight the importance of defense in the WNBA. Both teams are among the league’s top defenses. Golden State boasts the best regular-season defense, while Atlanta ranks third. During the playoffs, Atlanta holds the top defensive spot, closely followed by Golden State.
“This year specifically with these two teams, [defense] has been the staple, and that’s been something they’ve talked about consistently throughout the season,” said WNBA legend Tamika Catchings during a pre-finals broadcast call.
Both teams have multiple strengths, including coaching and bench play. We analyze these factors and what each team brings to the table.
Backcourt Advantage: Atlanta Dream
The Dream’s backcourt remains strong, even with uncertainty around Allisha Gray’s availability. Jordin Canada and Rhyne Howard have excelled, both earning spots on the WNBA All-Defensive teams. They average 2.2 steals each in the playoffs, contributing to Atlanta scoring 24.4 points off turnovers per game. Canada’s shooting has also been impressive, hitting 51.6% from the field and 50% from three.
Frontcourt Advantage: Golden State Valkyries
Golden State has an elite roster of wings and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Kiah Stokes at center. Stokes excels in defense, supported by players like Gabby Williams and Kayla Thornton who can score, shoot, and rebound effectively. Together, they help Golden State allow the fewest points in the paint during the season.
Coaching Advantage: Natalie Nakase, Golden State Valkyries
Coaches Natalie Nakase and Karl Smesko have both led their teams to the finals in their second year. Nakase stands out for her ability to communicate and engage the Valkyries in her vision, earning recognition as the 2025 Coach of the Year.
Bench Advantage: Golden State Valkyries
The Valkyries possess a deep bench, capable of utilizing numerous players. This depth allowed them to rotate 10 players in the semifinals. Players like Kaitlyn Chen and Tiffany Hayes add flexibility and scoring options when needed.
Home Court Advantage: Golden State Valkyries
The Valkyries lead in attendance, and their home court at Chase Center provides a strong advantage due to its energetic atmosphere. In contrast, the Dream have faced challenges with their venue, though they will play at the larger State Farm Arena for the finals.
Prediction: Atlanta Dream Clinch 2026 WNBA Title
Despite Golden State’s various advantages, Atlanta has momentum, having won every game since August 28th. Angel Reese and others have performed well under pressure. Analyst Cheryl Miller predicts a competitive series with no sweeps.
The Dream’s ability to capitalize on turnovers and transition play makes them a formidable opponent. Angel Reese and Jordin Canada are key to their success, with Canada anticipated to win Finals MVP.
