A security officer from a prestigious Boston school has been charged with the rape of a woman visiting from Ireland. The incident reportedly occurred at the Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard.
Edward Brown, 27, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. Prosecutors stated that the alleged attack happened on August 15, inside the barracks, where Brown was staying as a guest of a trooper friend, Ryan Costello.
The prosecution claims Brown met the victim at The Ritz, a bar in Oak Bluffs. The victim reported that after meeting a man at the bar, she blacked out and later found herself naked and in distress outside the barracks. Responding officers noted bruises and marks on her body.
Assistant District Attorney Courtney Scalice shared the victim’s statement, describing how she was pursued around the bar by a man in a white hat before losing consciousness. Upon awakening, she found herself assaulted, managed to escape, and sought help.
Brown’s arrest followed an investigation involving the Oak Bluffs Police and Boston Police Department’s anti-corruption division. A search warrant on Brown’s Uber account confirmed that he and the victim arrived at the barracks via Uber shortly before police were notified.
“These allegations are deeply troubling,” said Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble. “We are fully cooperating with the investigation and reviewing our policies.”
Brown was later arrested at Boston Latin Academy, where cocaine was allegedly found in his possession. His past included reports of harassment by ex-girlfriends.
Brown was released on $10,000 bail, despite prosecutors requesting $50,000. The judge imposed restrictions, including staying away from the victim. Brown, who has entered a not guilty plea, is set to return to court on December 11. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and mandatory registration as a sex offender.
