The global supply of helium is under threat following Iranian attacks on a Qatari gas facility and the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz. This has led to a significant shortage affecting numerous industries with no resolution in sight. Many associate helium with party balloons, but this essential natural resource powers modern innovations. Without it, production of smartphones, cars, MRI machines, rocket launches, and missiles halts.
Challenges in Helium Extraction and Supply
Helium extraction and transportation present unique challenges, as noted by Cliff Cain, a president of a helium exploration company. Helium must be maintained at extremely low temperatures, about 452 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, making its transport difficult. Once released into the atmosphere, helium is irretrievable. Cain has long warned about the fragile helium supply chain, underscored by its concentration in few nations: Algeria, Poland, Russia, Qatar, and the United States. The majority comes from Qatar and the U.S. “The loss of just a few sourcing locations could disrupt the entire supply chain,” Cain remarked.
Impact of the Iran Conflict on Helium Supply
The Strait of Hormuz’s closure in February trapped a third of global helium in the Persian Gulf. Subsequent attacks on the Ras Laffan facility in Qatar, a major producer, further disturbed supply chains. Following the attacks, Qatar anticipated a minimum of three years needed to restore full operations. Ras Laffan, a key player in global helium production, did not comment on the damage to its helium infrastructure. The U.S., the other major supplier, has seen a surge in exports by 70% since the conflict began. However, experts warn that relying solely on the U.S. won’t sustain global demand indefinitely.
Rich Brooke, a former executive at a leading helium supplier, reported that spot prices have tripled since the conflict’s onset. Countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore now depend on the U.S. for helium, but the duration of this demand coverage depends on the conflict’s progression. Some suppliers are drawing from reserves stored underground, but the strategy is temporary.
The Role of Helium in Technology and Defense
“Without helium, modern warfare capabilities diminish significantly,” Cain said. Helium’s role in fiber optics, munitions, and electronics is crucial, highlighting its military importance. During this ongoing conflict, the Pentagon has increased defense production, further straining helium supply.
Helium is indispensable for various scientific fields too. At the University of Chicago, Joe Sachleben’s lab uses helium in nuclear magnetic resonance machines crucial for developing treatments for cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Sachleben emphasizes there’s no alternative to helium to maintain the magnet’s temperature at -452 degrees.
Helium Usage in Electronics
The semiconductor industry consumes about a fifth of the world’s helium, crucial for processes at facilities like Polar Semiconductors. The company, which makes chips for car engines and military systems, incorporates helium into 40-50% of its manufacturing steps. As demand for semiconductors grows, so does the pressure on helium supply.
Strategizing Against Helium Shortages
Polar Semiconductor, along with other companies, is working to navigate the shortage by diversifying suppliers. However, one supplier has already implemented a rationing program. Sachleben’s lab faces similar constraints, receiving only half of its previous helium supply from their supplier. Attempts to secure a new supplier revealed further challenges, with notifications warning of potential supply exhaustion soon.
With the conflict in Iran persisting, anticipation of a complete depletion of helium supplies remains worrisome. Sachleben is not optimistic about securing necessary helium quantities until the geopolitical situation stabilizes, anticipating that even post-conflict, restoring supply lines will take time.
