Want to eliminate debt as quickly as possible? Embrace a challenging journey where you cut nearly all spending, take on a side job, and use extreme measures for a better financial future. This path is tough, but rewarding too. Here are six strategies to keep your motivation strong:
1. Set a Specific Goal
Tony and Meredith Gardner, a couple interviewed for this topic, aimed to be debt-free by age 30. Behavioral science professor Ayelet Fishbach from the University of Chicago highlights that setting a precise goal, such as saving a certain amount, increases your likelihood of success compared to a vague goal like saving as much as possible.
2. Plan to Resist Temptations
Anticipating temptations is key. Fishbach advises identifying future temptations and planning how to confront them. The Gardners found that using a cash-only system helped. They allocated cash to envelopes marked with budget categories. Once the envelope was empty, overspending was impossible. Tony Gardner noted that using cash made them more aware of their spending.
3. Make the Challenge Enjoyable
Fishbach states that without some joy, you might give up. The challenge shouldn’t be all sacrifice. Incorporate enjoyable elements to create balance and maintain motivation.
4. Seek Social Support
Admit your financial struggles to gain support. Tell your family and community about your goals. Fishbach recommends involving them in your plans to garner their encouragement and assistance.
5. Break the Challenge into Smaller Goals
The start and end of your debt reduction journey can feel exhilarating, but the middle may be taxing. Set smaller goals to achieve frequent wins and sustain your momentum throughout.
6. Reward Yourself Sensibly
Small rewards can be vital for maintaining progress. For the Gardners, a reward of $20 a month was sufficient to stay motivated without derailing their overall goal. Although their initial goal wasn’t achieved by 30, they reached it by 31, overcoming obstacles and celebrating small successes along the way.
