The Pittsburgh Steelers have welcomed Aaron Rodgers back for another season. Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann pointed to Mike McCarthy as the main reason behind Rodgers’ decision to return. Theismann, 76, explained that learning a new system entirely might have discouraged Rodgers from coming back.
I think Aaron coming back was a no-brainer because Mike McCarthy’s there,Theismann told Fox News Digital.
If Rodgers faced a new coordinator, Theismann believes the scenario might have been different. With McCarthy, Theismann felt the likelihood of Rodgers’ return was significant.
McCarthy and Rodgers had collaborated for 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, and Theismann noted that this familiarity would aid Rodgers. Understanding the existing system eases the transition for Rodgers, allowing him to bypass extensive years relearning terminology and reads.
In the previous season, Rodgers demonstrated his capabilities by completing 65.7% of his passes in 16 games, throwing for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Despite Rodgers’ sharp throwing skills at 42, his mobility has diminished. Theismann emphasized the importance of a strong offensive line to support Rodgers’ performance.
He’s going to get the ball out quickly. They need to shore up the offensive line to protect him,Theismann said.
The Steelers, under new coaching, are expected to maintain their signature brand. Theismann affirmed that their strong and tough playstyle won’t waver within the challenging division.
Theismann, who spent 12 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL, notably achieved league MVP in 1983. He led the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl victory in 1982. His career stats include completing 56.7% of his passes, totaling 25,206 yards with 160 touchdowns and 138 interceptions.
Theismann will participate in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Golf Course, televised on NBC and Peacock. Follow Fox News Digital for sports updates.
