Indiana has changed the dynamics against Michigan. Under the guidance of coach Curt Cignetti, the sixth-ranked Hoosiers have emerged as a model of excellence. They achieved success and a national championship with a balanced offense that protects the ball and an assertive defense that excels in the turnover department.
“They’re executing exactly how we aim to,” commented Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham.
Historically, the situation was different. Michigan, a leading program in college football, had triumphed in 85% of its encounters with Indiana, its highest success rate against a Big Ten team. Until last November, Indiana held the most losses in college football before claiming their first national title.
The Wolverines have dominated the rivalries, winning 42 out of the last 45 contests against Indiana and 22 consecutive home games since losing nearly six decades ago in the pre-Bo Schembechler era.
This Saturday, the Hoosiers (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) are favorites by seven points against Michigan (4-2, 1-2) at the Big House. They are on track to win two consecutive games in this series for the first time since 1958-59. Cignetti anticipates facing a confident Michigan after their 21-18 victory over Penn State last week. “They’ll be feeling pretty good about themselves after that,” he stated.
Michigan’s Starting Quarterback Uncertain
Michigan’s quarterback situation remains undecided. Tommy Carr, interviewed by CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell, led Michigan to a victory over Penn State on October 17, 2026, in Ann Arbor.
Whittingham and his staff devised a quarterback strategy after benching Bryce Underwood and giving Tommy Carr a chance against the Nittany Lions. Cignetti remarked, “Gave them a shot in the arm.” Although Whittingham hasn’t revealed Saturday’s starting quarterback, it’s likely Carr will make his debut against the Hoosiers.
Cignetti noted, “I would assume it would be him.”
Carr’s family background includes grandfather Lloyd Carr, a Michigan national title-winning coach in 1997, and Tom Curtis, an All-America defensive back with the school’s career interception record. His brother, CJ Carr, is currently starting for Notre Dame.
Cignetti’s Winning Strategy
Indiana, having lost their first game since 2024, has not faced back-to-back defeats under Cignetti’s leadership. Their success revolves around turnover margins, being even or positive for 31 consecutive games, a record in major college football since 1995. “The key to their dominance in the last two and a half years lies there,” mentioned Whittingham.
Minnesota
Michigan tight end Zack Marshall missed the game against Penn State following the leak of group messages criticizing the team’s offensive scheme. “More of a non-injury situation,” Whittingham explained regarding the senior’s absence. Marshall apologized for his comments after a 20-14 loss at Minnesota, but this didn’t grant him a return. Michigan has reported a Big Ten-low of 136 points.
Indiana’s Streak Ends
The Hoosiers almost defeated then-No. 4 Ohio State last week, ending a 22-game winning streak that stretched back to a 2024 College Football Playoff game versus Notre Dame. Indiana’s last regular-season loss was also against the Buckeyes, but they rebounded with a 66-0 victory over Purdue, marking Purdue’s worst defeat in history.
