Controversy Surrounds Beverly Hills School Board Candidate Over Alleged Antisemitic Remarks
Beverly Hills school board candidate Kim Lifschitz is under scrutiny due to allegations of antisemitism. Screenshots have emerged, purportedly showing her mocking trustee Russell Stuart’s visit to Jerusalem’s Western Wall, a significant Jewish site.
The controversy stems from messages attributed to Lifschitz, which responded to an article about Stuart’s New Year’s Day visit. One message allegedly ridicules his use of a kippah, questioning its sincerity. Another comment makes light of the head covering, suggesting it was used to store airplane snacks.
Russell Stuart, whose family is Jewish, condemned these remarks, stating they went beyond political criticism and ventured into religious ridicule. He emphasized that mocking Jewish observance was offensive, and personal attacks disguised as internet content were inappropriate.
Lifschitz countered these allegations in a statement, arguing that her comments were aimed at what she perceived as Stuart’s use of religious symbols for political gain. She asserted that her intent was not antisemitic, but rather to criticize what she saw as the trivialization of Jewish culture.
Adding to the controversy, a screenshot showed a message attributed to Lifschitz, ridiculing Board Vice President Sigalie Sabag’s discussion of Holocaust survivors, comparing the discussion to collecting Pokémon. Stuart called these remarks antisemitic, urging Lifschitz to address them directly.
Lifschitz’s husband faced separate criticism linked to Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Piker praised Daniel Lifschitz after his critical remarks on a school board resolution were discussed on Piker’s livestream. The screenshots captured Daniel Lifschitz’s acknowledgment of his featured comments, which were replayed without his participation as a guest.
As the election approaches, Lifschitz faces backlash from various quarters, including California GOP Jewish Engagement Chair Elizabeth Barcohana. Barcohana has criticized Lifschitz’s candidacy, citing her comments as prejudiced and unserious about education.
Lifschitz emphasized the importance of role modeling appropriate behavior for students. She defended the private nature of the group-chat messages, suggesting that her remarks were taken out of context by those seeking to portray her negatively.
Barcohana also criticized past leadership within the Beverly Hills school district, citing efforts by parents to reclaim control over education policies and spending. These efforts reportedly led to improvements in academic performance and financial management.
