North Carolina State University has announced the dismissal of head football coach Dave Doeren. This decision follows the team’s recent 31-28 loss to Stanford, dropping their season record to 3-4. Athletic director Boo Corrigan expressed gratitude for Doeren’s service, stating, “I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride. I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, [wife] Sara and his family the best in the future.”
The program is set to begin its search for a new head coach immediately. Doeren began with the Wolfpack in 2013 after two years at Northern Illinois, marking his first head coaching position. Despite a challenging 3-9 debut season, he transformed NC State into a regular bowl game contender, participating in 11 bowl games over 13 full seasons, including the last six consecutively. However, this season they have stumbled, holding a 1-3 record in ACC play.
After the latest defeat, Doeren stated, “It starts with me. The guys didn’t play well enough which means I didn’t have them ready.”
“Doeren achieved a 98-73 record with NC State, following a strong 23-4 record with Northern Illinois.”
Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will step in as the interim head coach for the duration of the season. The team aims to begin the post-Doeren era during their upcoming game against California on Halloween.
Doeren’s departure marks the second coaching change this season, following the split between Maryland and Mike Locksley earlier this week.
