Cam Skattebo, the New York Giants running back, is recognized for his intense playing style. Known for his hard runs, he often strikes defenders with significant force. On Sunday, he faced scrutiny from NFL officials while attempting to bulldoze over a Houston Texans player during their game.
The NFL raised concerns, suggesting Skattebo may have crossed a line in his aggressive approach.
In the first quarter, Skattebo received a handoff from quarterback J.J. McCarthy. He discovered an opening, lowered his helmet, and collided with safety M.J. Stewart. A flag was thrown on the play, and Skattebo was penalized for unnecessary roughness as a result of lowering his helmet. This call leaves questions about what Skattebo could have done differently.
Helmet-to-helmet collisions occur in the NFL, often leading to penalties when a player targets a defenseless opponent. However, this situation involved a runner, introducing uncertainty about the ruling’s fairness. Even Giants head coach John Harbaugh appeared to find the situation puzzling.
The game against the Texans was closely contested during Week 7, tying at halftime with a score of 14-14. Skattebo’s recent form was analyzed in the context of his absence from carries during the previous game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. This absence seemed notable, though Harbaugh clarified that Skattebo’s inactivity was not intentional.
“It wasn’t by design for him not to carry the ball,” Harbaugh commented, explaining that the play-calling didn’t deliberately sideline Skattebo.
Harbaugh elaborated on the team’s strategy, mentioning that they aimed to involve all running backs equally and hoped to identify a standout performer. The Giants did not expect to find themselves trailing by 24 points.
Despite concerns regarding Skattebo’s fumbles this season, these issues had not led to any formal benching. His participation returned in Week 7, highlighting his continued importance to the team’s offense.
