Election seasons often heat up with intense policy exchanges and personal attacks. This year’s midterms have gone further, with incidents that have drawn widespread criticism. Noteworthy moments include a controversial campaign ad in Ohio and heated debate exchanges. Here are seven significant attacks from this election cycle.
Ohio Campaign Ad Controversy
Ohio’s Republican gubernatorial candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, stirred controversy by releasing an ad featuring his opponent’s estranged mother. In the ad, Donna Arthur, the biological mother of Democratic candidate Amy Acton, accused her daughter of being a “liar” and encouraged Ohioans to vote against Acton. Acton’s brother labeled the ad a “despicable low.” Acton had previously revealed in 2019 that she was sexually abused by her stepfather and removed from Arthur’s care at age 12. Despite facing criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, Ramaswamy’s campaign stood by the ad. Support from figures like President Trump and Vice President Vance further fueled the debate.
Accusations in Georgia
In Georgia, Sen. Jon Ossoff repeatedly accused his Republican opponent, Rep. Mike Collins, of being a “bigot” due to controversial social media posts by Collins and his staff. During a debate, Ossoff alleged Collins established a work environment involving “neo-Nazi content.” Collins responded by denouncing racism and antisemitism, distancing himself from the offending posts. Concerns were also raised over Collins’s digital footprint, including a video that displayed racially insensitive behavior that Collins later acknowledged as inappropriate.
Masculinity Attacks in Texas
James Talarico, Texas Senate nominee, faced a series of personal attacks from the GOP focusing on his masculinity and vegan lifestyle. Derisive nicknames and insinuations about his gender identity surfaced, with Vice President Vance making a jest at a rally. Talarico turned these attacks into a fundraising opportunity by selling themed shirts. He acknowledged the publicity generated from the attacks, expressing gratitude for the visibility.
Maine Debate Exchange
During a Maine Senate debate, Democratic candidate Troy Jackson told incumbent Sen. Susan Collins to “shut up.” This exchange occurred after Collins suggested a protester was a supporter of Jackson. Jackson denied knowing the protester and refused to apologize, emphasizing he did not appreciate being wrongfully accused.
Anti-Trans Attacks in South Carolina
In South Carolina, Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews was targeted by President Trump’s use of an anti-transgender slur. Trump praised her opponent, Sen. Darline Graham, while disparaging Andrews with unfounded claims about her stance on transgender issues. Andrews dismissed the attack and maintained her focus on addressing local economic concerns.
Muslim Brotherhood Allegations in Michigan
In Michigan, Republican nominee Mike Rogers attempted to associate Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed with the Muslim Brotherhood. Rogers pointed to campaign donations from individuals connected to the group. El-Sayed denied any ties and expressed pride in American constitutional rights during a debate. Rogers faced backlash for implying El-Sayed might have terrorist relations, which El-Sayed promptly challenged.
Mockery in Michigan
Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endured online mockery over her voice and appearance following a viral pep talk. Her opponent, El-Sayed, faced claims of sexism for suggesting AIPAC, a supporter of Stevens, should help improve her communication skills. Retiring Sen. Gary Peters criticized the personal attacks and urged focus on political issues. Despite these challenges, El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination, with Stevens offering her support.
