Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched thousands of attacks last week. These included 1,600 guided aerial bombs, 48 missiles, and nearly 2,300 attack drones. The attacks have resulted in casualties almost daily, according to Zelensky.
Zelensky announced on social media that SpaceX’s Starlink and Starshield services were restored in Ukraine to their previous speeds. These services are crucial for military communications, as well as drone and logistics operations. He noted that the restoration was sufficient by Saturday morning, improving defenses against Russian drones.
Elon Musk contended that Ukraine violated SpaceX’s commercial terms by using Starlink for drone strikes. However, Musk emphasized that the U.S. government controls changes to Starshield, the military-grade service supporting Ukraine’s defense network. Prominent U.S. political figures denied involvement in any service disruptions.
The previous week of service restrictions hampered Ukraine’s ability to intercept some Russian drones. Ukrainian officials criticized these unannounced restrictions, emphasizing the speed limits placed on Starlink terminals. This disruption affected battlefield operations significantly.
In response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian facilities, President Vladimir Putin stated that the strikes have cost Russia about 1% of its gross domestic product. Trump pressured Ukraine to halt these attacks, citing their impact on U.S. diesel prices. Meanwhile, Musk distanced himself from service terms enforcement, placing ultimate responsibility on the U.S. government.
Serhii Beskrestnov, a defense technology adviser, refuted Musk’s claims about Starlink usage for offensive strikes. He clarified that speed restrictions on civilian Starlink systems within Ukraine make such use impossible.
Sources indicated that the White House ordered the slowdown, though U.S. officials and politicians, including Rubio, disputed any governmental involvement in Starlink decisions.
After connectivity restoration, Zelensky expressed gratitude to the American government and partners for addressing the issue. He acknowledged the efforts of lawmakers, media, and officials in resolving the situation and reiterated the emphasis on the protection of lives.
