National Anthems and the Importance of Tradition in Sports
Greg Gutfeld and the panel from ‘Gutfeld!’ discussed the criticism surrounding Martha Reeves’ rendition of the national anthem at a Women’s Pro Baseball League game. The discussion highlighted how words and their meanings carry weight in public performances.
In a more recent incident, controversy flared in France due to changes in the national anthem before an NFL game. Singer Nina Tonji performed La Marseillaise at Stade de France, altering its lyrics. Her version, though met with applause, sparked backlash online due to the changed wording.
Tonji modified the original line “Qu’un sang impur abreuve nos sillons!” to “Qu’un sang uni abreuve nos sillons!” This shift from “impure blood” to “united blood” altered the anthem’s historical context. Originally, it called for overcoming enemies and traitors. The modification turned it into a plea for national unity, including immigrants.
“May impure blood water our furrows/fields” was a revolutionary cry against foes. The change to “united” seeks inclusion and solidarity.
This adjustment came amidst tension in France regarding immigration. Some recent protests were driven by immigrants, which heightened sensitivity to such changes.
The viral reaction to Tonji’s version spread through social media. Prominent accounts with large followings shared the performance, amplifying the debate. While some overlooked the change, many criticized the alteration as disrespectful to the anthem’s tradition.
The NFL often finds itself at the center of national anthem controversies. To address this, the league could require artists to adhere strictly to the traditional lyrics. While performers can interpret the piece, altering the words can shift them from artists to activists.
The league has significant influence over pregame and halftime acts. Clarity in contractual agreements with artists might prevent public relations issues and maintain respect for national symbols.
