Citizens from Aurora’s 10 wards gathered for a community clean-up event last weekend. Aurora resident Vivana Vargas expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its importance for community involvement. “We are from the 5th Ward and, first of all, I want to teach the kids to participate in the community and I’m also very involved with things here,” Vargas shared. Her commitment to community engagement is evident as she, along with her two sons, registered for the event at Water Street Mall.
During this second city-organized clean-up effort of the year, volunteers began their tasks at 8:30 a.m., starting with picking up materials and meeting fellow crew members. Jon Zaghloul, director of communications for Aurora, voiced expectations for this follow-up event, which was initiated by the mayor’s office and the community engagement division earlier in the year.
“This was launched in the spring of 2026,” Zaghloul explained, “to enhance neighborhood beautification and unite the community.” He emphasized the significance of a citywide coordinated effort, as opposed to individual ward activities.
The clean-up event aimed to foster camaraderie among residents. “This is the second event and it’s a great opportunity to bring out the entire community to work together on one specific day and clean up all 10 wards,” Zaghloul noted. “It provides neighbors and residents with an opportunity to get to know one another and unites everybody around a common cause.”
Kathy Torres from the 1st Ward also participated, driven by community pride. “We have to have pride and take care of it,” she said. Meeting others in her neighborhood was an added benefit. “Absolutely. It’s good to meet others and I am looking forward to that,” Torres added.
Mike Donato, though a resident of Palatine, contributed to the clean-up as an employee of the Aurora Fire Department. “I work here but wanted to participate,” Donato said, reflecting his pride in the city. “I love working here and I want it to look nice,” he emphasized, committing to the beautification effort.
