Robert C. White Jr.’s Resignation
Robert C. White Jr., a prominent Democrat, plans to succeed Eleanor Holmes Norton as the District’s delegate to the U.S. House. To maintain eligibility, White intends to resign from the D.C. Council effective Monday. A 1970 law stipulates that a delegate candidate cannot hold a paid public office on the election date.
This decision follows an unexpected opinion from the D.C. attorney general, advising White he must resign before Election Day. Although he disagreed with this opinion, White chose not to pursue changes to the law or court intervention. White’s resignation ends a decade-long tenure as an at-large council member.
Unemployment Claims Near Historic Lows
Unemployment claims in the United States have dropped to near historic lows. The Labor Department reported 194,000 new claims last week, levels last seen in the late 1960s. Economists attribute low layoffs to retirements and immigration restrictions.
Despite low layoffs, economic concerns persist. Inflation and stagnant wages weigh heavily on Americans’ minds as midterm elections approach. Though unemployment is low, the job market remains challenging, especially for Black Americans and recent graduates.

U.S. Military Casualties Updated
The Pentagon reported two noncombat U.S. military deaths during the Iran conflict, increasing the total to 23. Both individuals were airmen who died in nonhostile incidents. The updated tally includes a mix of combat and noncombat fatalities, with multiple nonhostile deaths linked to a plane crash earlier this year.
Despite a ceasefire, challenges persist as attacks continue. Over 865 troops have been wounded since the conflict began.
Federal Debt Exceeds GDP
The U.S. federal debt now surpasses the economy’s size for the first time since World War II, reaching a debt-to-GDP ratio of 100.3 percent. This raises concerns about the fiscal future, as some elements driving economic growth start to diminish.
While consumer spending remains an economic engine, experts predict moderation in the coming months. Inflation and high interest rates could impact household budgets and add further pressure to economic dynamics.
