Last week’s mass shooting in Mundelein claimed the life of a young, kind-hearted man, Maclaine Schmidt. At 22, Schmidt from Lake Bluff had a passion for cooking, working in the restaurant sector around Chicago. Many, including restaurateur Bruno Abate, have shared heartfelt tributes on social media. Abate described Schmidt as a ‘brilliant and passionate chef’ and ‘an unbelievable young man.’ He remembered Mac for his kindness, genuineness, and humility.
Tragically, Mundelein police have reported that Schmidt was fatally shot by his father, Bryan, at his grandparents’ home on October 18. Alongside Maclaine, Bryan also killed James Schmidt, 80; Rebecca Schmidt, 77; and his girlfriend Nicole A. Heiser, 37, before turning the gun on himself. The grisly scene was discovered after a concerned family member requested a welfare check. Two handguns and suicide notes were retrieved at the scene.
The motives behind the horrifying act remain under investigation. Schmidt had been under Abate’s mentorship for two years, building a career in North Shore’s restaurant kitchens. His unexpected death has deeply impacted those who cherished him. To support Schmidt’s family, over $17,000 has been raised via GoFundMe to manage expenses, including funeral arrangements, therapy, and legal costs.
In alignment with his family’s wishes, Maclaine’s remains will undergo a transformation into soil by Earth Funeral, based in Maryland, as reported by the Lake County coroner. Details for the funerals of his grandparents and father are pending. Nicole Heiser’s visitation is set for Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Home, with a Mass to follow Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Gurnee.
