Graham Platner’s Senate Campaign Faces Challenges Amid Controversies

Graham Platner, running for the Maine Senate, confronts a whirlwind of controversy. In 2025, his wife Amy Gertner revealed to his campaign that he sent sexual messages to other women. This disclosure occurred during an internal campaign vetting process. Initially reported by the Wall Street Journal, Gertner expressed in a statement that after counseling, their marriage is now ‘stronger than ever.’

Gertner stated, ‘I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.’ She expressed betrayal and privacy invasion after confiding deeply personal marriage details to a campaign staffer.

Platner, the leading Democratic candidate, is expected to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November’s elections. His campaign faced backlash over offensive online comments and a tattoo from his Marine days resembling a Nazi symbol, which he has since covered.

The Maine Senate race is pivotal for control of the chamber post-midterms. Platner has support from progressive Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. He focuses on a populist platform highlighting his working-class roots.

In an interview with CBS News, Platner attributed past controversial opinions to post-traumatic stress disorder and his military experience, describing it as ‘a hyper-masculine, hyper-violent place.’ He noted, ‘Over the years, I met more people, had more experiences, and my opinions have changed.’
