The Indianapolis Colts have declared themselves sellers leading up to the NFL trade deadline on November 10. This has sparked curiosity among football fans about which other struggling teams might follow suit.
The New York Jets, who share the Colts’ 2-5 record, are under the spotlight. They have several veterans who could be traded, including standout receiver Garrett Wilson. The Jets hold the longest active playoff drought in professional sports, stretching to 15 seasons.
Garrett Wilson’s Contributions and Concerns
During a media event before their Week 8 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Wilson addressed trade rumors. He expressed his desire to remain with the Jets, though he’s not content with the ongoing losing culture since being selected 10th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. He told reporters via ESPN, “Yeah, I want to be here, man. I want to win games and that’s the one thing we’ve been missing on here. I love it here.” He added, “Do I love it more than I love winning? Nah, to be completely honest, but I’m hopeful.”
Wilson’s comments came after a visibly frustrating day during a 28-25 loss to the Miami Dolphins. During the game, he was targeted only three times by quarterback Geno Smith, catching two passes for 26 yards.
Wilson’s Contract and Trade Speculations
Wilson is under contract through 2030, having signed a four-year, $130 million deal. His high price tag makes a trade less straightforward. Nonetheless, the Jets history of dealing first-round talent leaves uncertainty. Recently, the Jets traded defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys and cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts.
Though Wilson wants to stay, frustration is growing as the Jets keep losing. The team has gone 24-51 since he joined, with their best season at 7-10.
Current Perspective and Outlook
“I’d be lying if I said it’s not,” Wilson admitted about his frustration with losses and minimal game targets. “But at the end of the day it comes down to … winning and losing. When things go right, I tend to have a part in that. And when it doesn’t, it seems avoidable.”
His frustration stems from a desire to win and contribute, despite not having the opportunity consistently. He hopes his determination and experience will lead to a change in the Jets’ fortunes.
