In Minneapolis, the Republican contender for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, John Nagel, has intensified his criticism of Representative Ilhan Omar. This comes amidst a federal investigation into her alleged immigration fraud, which Nagel references as he challenges the Somali-born congresswoman’s stance.
Nagel claims Minneapolis faces significant issues with Somali gangs and terrorism. He references the FBI’s recent intervention in a terror plot at the Mall of America. On October 7, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, an 18-year-old of Somali descent, was arrested. Mohamud allegedly planned a terror attack and had affiliations with an ISIS offshoot, al-Shabaab.
Local authorities have connected Somali gangs to recent violence in Minneapolis suburbs. For instance, there was a shooting at Eden Prairie High School during homecoming. Following a gang-related incident, Abdirahman Ahmed Jama was charged after being arrested. He was later targeted in another shooting in Bloomington.
Nagel highlights the diversity of gangs in the area, pointing out issues not only with Somali gangs but also with Asian, Black, and Latino gangs. He advocates for a task force to address these challenges.
Nagel argues that Omar and her party have inadequately addressed violence tied to Somali-American gangs. He mentions the past criticism faced by officials like Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher when raising concerns about Somali gang violence.
“The problem was, he was right. There was a Somali gang problem,” Nagel stated, emphasizing that acknowledging the issue no longer carries accusations of racism.
Regarding Omar, Nagel insists she should be afforded due process in her immigration investigation, a sentiment he believes she also supports.
However, he argues that it should be straightforward for Omar to address public concerns about her immigration status. Documents or a DNA test could clarify misunderstandings, fostering trust with her constituents.
Nagel questions Omar’s loyalty to the United States. He believes she prioritizes Somalia based on her rhetoric and actions, suggesting the U.S. serves as merely a financial resource for her.
