DoorDash has announced the acquisition of Instacart for $17 billion, a move that aims to strengthen its position in the grocery delivery landscape. Despite the acquisition, the Instacart brand and app will continue to operate independently. Instacart shoppers will still be able to fulfill orders under the Instacart banner.
Grocers will have the flexibility to choose whether to partner with Instacart or DoorDash for their delivery needs. This acquisition opens up access to an additional 50,000 stores through DoorDash, broadening the options for Instacart users.
Instacart, established in 2012, focuses on delivering groceries and convenience items in both the U.S. and Canada. It employs around 600,000 independent contractors as shoppers. According to the company’s reports, Instacart completed 338 million orders in the previous year and currently holds a market valuation of $14 billion.
