As the midterm elections approach, political spending has reached unprecedented levels. Over $11 billion has been invested in nationwide races, shattering previous records. Republicans strive to retain majorities in the House and Senate, facing a national landscape increasingly favorable to Democrats.
Unprecedented Ad Spending
The ad-tracking firm AdImpact reports that both Texas and Ohio have each seen over $500 million in ad spending for Senate races. Democrats aim to challenge Republicans in traditional strongholds. Meanwhile, gubernatorial race ad spending hit a new high of $2.4 billion, significantly surpassing the 2022 cycle by over half a billion.
Figures indicate that the 2025-26 cycle has become the most costly in history, exceeding previous midterms and presidential contests. As of Monday, ad spending and reservations reached $11.21 billion, eclipsing the $11.2 billion spent during the 2023-24 presidential cycle.
Spending on Key Races
House races accounted for $2.3 billion, an increase from $1.6 billion in 2022. Spending on governor’s races climbed to $2.6 billion. Senate races garnered $3.2 billion, matching costs for presidential campaigns in 2024.
Significant financial commitments indicate the fierce competition this year. President Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC spent $277 million recently, with the Republican National Committee adding another $44 million to campaign efforts.
Breakdown of Major Races
In Texas, ad spending surpassed previous records with $558 million dedicated to the contest. Similarly, over $500 million was spent on the Ohio Senate race. California’s gubernatorial race and Michigan’s Senate face-off are among the top-10 priciest non-presidential races.
Elon Musk has injected substantial funding into campaigns, spending over $442 million. Musk supported Republican candidates heavily, with $158 million funneled to a pro-Paxton super PAC in Texas.
Influence of Major Donors
The top 40 donors contributed $2.5 billion by mid-October, up from $755 million in 2018. These contributors predominantly backed Republicans, accounting for $1.5 billion of private donations.
Cryptocurrency firms also became significant players, with $176 million invested across over a hundred races, aiming to elect supportive policymakers.
House Races Entering Top-10 Most Expensive
Eight House races from this cycle rank among the 10 most expensive in history. Key contests include North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, Florida’s 25th District, and New York’s 17th District.
This election will determine whether such financial investments yield the desired political returns. The latest forecasts give Democrats strong chances of gaining control of the House and possibly the Senate, amid voter discontent with the current administration.
