Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s top military planner, sparking concern over the removal of experienced commanders. Sylvia, formerly leading the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s strategy, planning, and policy division, was let go as the Trump administration considered renewing military action against Iran.
The absence of a peace agreement has prolonged conflict with Tehran for eight months. U.S. officials worry this ongoing tension might undermine American military strength elsewhere, depleting resources like the valuable yet limited Patriot interceptor missiles.
President Trump has vowed to “finish the job” with Iran alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a move that supports Netanyahu ahead of indecisive Israeli elections.
This dismissal follows a pattern seen with the previous planner, Lieutenant General Joseph McGee, who had tensions with Hegseth before his removal. Former officials highlight the importance of the J5 role, linking operational forces, policy, and the White House. While the reason for Sylvia’s removal remains unclear, an unidentified source mentioned a lack of confidence. The Pentagon has not announced his successor.
Hegseth’s tenure has involved significant restructuring at the Pentagon. He criticized diversity efforts and promoted traditional “warrior” ideals. He also directed a reduction in U.S. generals and admirals by 2027, arguing that it was past due. During a gathering in September 2025, he expressed sharp critiques of the current military leadership.
Several senior officials have exited under Hegseth:
- General Charles “CQ” Brown Jr.: Replaced by General Dan Caine shortly into Trump’s term in 2025.
- Admiral Lisa Franchetti: First female Chief of Naval Operations, dismissed alongside Brown.
- General James Slife: Air Force Vice Chief dismissed in the February 2025 reshuffling.
- Lieutenant General Joseph Berger: As Army judge advocate general, fired amid the early 2025 changes.
- General Randy George: Announced his immediate retirement in April 2026.
- General Chris Donahue: Resigned as head of U.S. Army Europe and NATO land forces in Europe.
- General Alvin Holsey: Stepped down from U.S. Southern Command by the end of 2025.
- Lieutenant General Jeffrey Kruse: Removed from the Defense Intelligence Agency in August 2025.
- Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield: Removed as NATO Military Committee representative due to “loss of confidence.”
- Major General William Green: Head of the Army Chaplain Corps, dismissed following critiques of chaplaincy management.
- Rear Admiral Milton Sands and Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore: Relieved from their roles in Naval Special Warfare and Navy Reserve, respectively.
- Army Secretary Dan Driscoll: Resigned in August 2026 after disagreements with Hegseth.
- Navy Secretary John Phelan: Departed in April 2026 amid firing reports.
Hegseth’s actions have prompted significant changes in military leadership, raising questions and concerns among U.S. and international military communities.
