Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks has sparked renewed discussion regarding NBA officiating after accusing the Oklahoma City Thunder of gaining advantages through their reputation. Brooks asserts that the Thunder, as defending champions, enjoy greater leniency concerning flopping, unlike other teams and players.
His comments contribute to a recurring narrative about the Oklahoma City Thunder. Opponents frequently criticize the team for their adeptness at drawing contact and securing trips to the free-throw line. Brooks is among the most outspoken of these critics, and his recent remarks suggest he sees the issue as extending beyond isolated calls.
In an interview shared on YouTube, Brooks raised questions about whether officials judge players differently based on reputation. He stated, “Refs talk, and I think they have like a list of floppers. I think OKC flops a lot, but they don’t get called for it because they got a pedigree. It’s all pick and choose, and you got to realize that refs are human, they’re not robots, so they’re going to see what they see and call what they call.”
This criticism is not unfamiliar territory for Brooks. He expressed dissatisfaction with officiating during the 2026 playoffs following Phoenix’s loss to Oklahoma City in Game 2 of their first-round matchup. Brooks specifically targeted Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who tallied 37 points and was perfect from the free-throw line in that game. At that time, Brooks argued that the playoffs should highlight more physical basketball and criticized what he perceived as players exaggerating contact to earn fouls.
