Spotlight on Musk’s Global Influence
Elon Musk’s involvement in a recent issue concerning Ukraine’s access to Starlink and its military network has highlighted his significant influence on the global stage. SpaceX, Musk’s company, faced scrutiny after acknowledging its role in limiting Starlink’s commercial services in Ukraine. While the reasons behind the Starshield slowdown remain debated, this situation underscores Musk’s impactful role in international and military matters.
“A lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea that an individual like a corporate leader, is essentially making foreign policy decisions about access,” said Michael Horowitz, director of the Defense and National Security program at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Since the war with Russia began, Ukraine has utilized Starlink’s services, and later added Starshield through a Pentagon contract with SpaceX. Founded in 2002, SpaceX has grown into the largest satellite and space company, further magnifying Musk’s leadership influence.
“No unelected civilian titan of industry should have the ability to interfere with a war in the way that SpaceX did here,” stated Andrew Grotto, director of Stanford University’s program on geopolitics, technology, and governance.
