The Chicago Bears have made a significant move by trading for All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans. Along with Simmons, the Bears also received a 2028 fifth-round draft pick. In return, the Bears gave up their first-round picks for 2027 and 2028, as well as a 2027 fourth-round pick. This trade, as announced by the Titans, is seen as a bold move by the Bears to strengthen their roster.
Simmons’ acquisition is notable, as he becomes the first defensive tackle since 1967 to be traded for multiple first-round picks, according to ESPN. Drafted 19th overall by the Titans in 2019, Simmons quickly established himself as one of the top players at his position. Over his career, Simmons has achieved four Pro Bowl selections, logging 414 tackles and 46.5 sacks in 106 games.
“There are few people like Jeff Simmons. We are forever grateful for all he has given this team and this city,” expressed Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk.
Simmons’ presence on the field was matched by his off-field contributions, notably through the Give ’Em A Reason Foundation, which has impacted communities in Middle Tennessee and Mississippi. His departure marks a significant change as the Titans face challenges this season.
The Bears, currently standing at 5-2, hope Simmons’ skill set will bolster their defense. Although the team has maintained a reasonable sack record, much of it has depended on blitzing tactics. The arrival of Simmons is set to provide a needed upgrade, particularly in increasing pressure rates where the Bears have lagged.
Alongside acquiring Simmons, the Bears are set to welcome back defensive end Montez Sweat. His return will further reinforce their defensive line as they compete in the NFC North, trailing behind the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
Simmons has secured his place with the Bears through a three-year, $105.8 million contract extension that will keep him on the team through 2030. The Bears aim to capitalize on his talents to improve their standings and secure a playoff position.
Meanwhile, the Titans, now at 1-6, are facing a rebuilding phase. Despite starting the season with hopes of contending in the AFC South, they are currently at the bottom. New quarterback Cam Ward has encountered challenges, contributing to the team’s struggles.
