Notre Dame’s Response to Allegations of Misconduct

A recent investigation commissioned by the University of Notre Dame has revealed shortcomings in the university’s response to allegations of sexual misconduct. The report indicates failures to address accusations against a former priest involved with students.

The investigation, conducted by the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, highlights that Rev. Thomas King was accused of implementing a coercive “weighing scheme” during the 1980s and 1990s. This involved expressing concern for the health of male students and requiring them to undress in a locker room for weighing.

“Once in the locker room, he would direct students to undress fully before they stepped onto a scale,” the report detailed. “Multiple individuals, some of whom were weighed, were sexually touched or assaulted by Fr. King, both at Notre Dame and after he left.”

The 25-page report concluded that Notre Dame, a prominent Catholic university, did not adequately respond to Father King’s alleged misconduct. Witnesses reportedly complained to university staff about him as early as the 1990s.

This situation is not unprecedented for the university. The report also listed two other instances where priests faced accusations of sexual abuse. Despite interviews with staff from relevant departments, none could recall receiving such complaints, suggesting a lack of awareness or understanding of the situation’s severity.
