Kyiv has intensified its attacks on Russian energy facilities. Overnight strikes were launched, targeting significant sites within Russia. Ukraine’s military denied any drone attacks on the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
Ukrainian Drone Strikes on Russian Energy
Ukraine’s General Staff reported a successful drone strike on the Saratov oil refinery in southwestern Russia, triggering a large fire. This refinery, owned by Rosneft, is believed to aid Moscow’s war efforts. Local Russian authorities confirmed damage to infrastructure but withheld specifics. An independent Russian channel, Astra, reported a fire at the refinery.
Recent Ukrainian attacks focus on Russian oil and gas facilities, claiming these sectors finance Moscow’s military actions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the strike, highlighting it as a significant action approximately 700 kilometers from the frontline.
Drone debris also caused a fire at a fuel depot in the Rostov region. Nearby residents were evacuated. Ukrainian forces confirmed hitting this location, resulting in extensive fire damage. Another strike targeted the Lazarevo pumping station in Russia’s Kirov region, further from Ukrainian control. This facility plays a key role in transferring oil from Siberia to Belarus.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Incident
Kyiv rejected claims of targeting the Zaporizhzhia plant. Russia’s nuclear energy company, Rosatom, accused Ukraine of striking a turbine hall. While Rosatom detailed a drone explosion, Ukrainian officials denied these allegations, calling them propaganda.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) noted damage consistent with a drone strike but reported normal radiation levels. Inspectors requested further access to assess the situation. The Zaporizhzhia plant, captured by Russia, remains a contentious site, frequently targeted amid the broader conflict. Both countries blame each other for attacks.
Allegations of Abducted Ukrainian Children
In an interview, Zelenskyy accused Russia of treating abducted Ukrainian children as combatants. He provided evidence suggesting these children are being trained to fight against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also accused Russia of split sibling pairs for adoption and offered trade for soldiers. The EU sanctioned officials aiding in child abductions, accusing Russia of forcing identity changes and military indoctrination. The International Criminal Court has also issued a warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over such activities.
Ongoing Drone Attacks in Ukraine
Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down most of the 299 Russian drones launched. A few drones reached their targets, causing casualties and damage. In the Chernihiv region, a truck driver died due to drone debris. Drones also struck Dnipro city and the Rivne region refinery, leading to fires and injuries. A subsequent attack increased casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk province.
