An Atlanta woman was tragically killed in a random stabbing on a MARTA train. The 66-year-old victim, Margaret Swan, was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. The incident occurred between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations.
MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher described the attack as senseless and expressed condolences to the victim’s family and witnesses. MARTA released a statement sharing similar sentiments.
A 25-year-old suspect, John Elijah Matthews, faces murder charges related to the incident. According to reports, Matthews allegedly approached Swan and began the attack by cutting her throat. The assault took place as the train neared the Oakland City MARTA station, as shown in surveillance footage.
CCTV footage reportedly shows Swan seated alone on the train. Matthews appeared on the footage moments later, standing next to her. Within seconds, he allegedly drew a knife and started the attack, stabbing Swan 18 to 20 times. The brutal assault was unprovoked.
During the attack, the victim reportedly screamed for help. Surveillance cameras captured the suspect throwing her to the floor and standing near her until the train stopped. When the train arrived at Oakland City Station, Matthews exited with the weapon still in hand. MARTA police officers quickly apprehended him on the platform.
Emergency services responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but Swan was pronounced dead. The stabbing was reported at approximately 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station.
This incident has heightened concerns among Atlanta passengers about train safety. Just last week, another individual was stabbed repeatedly at the Georgia State Station. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for further details.
