Iowa Senate Candidate Reflects on U.S.-Iran Conflict’s Political Impact

Ashley Hinson, a Republican candidate for the Iowa Senate, expressed concerns about the potential political consequences of the U.S. conflict with Iran if it extends beyond the coming weeks. This remark was captured in audio from a campaign event in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on May 28. The conversation included questions about the ongoing conflict and the possibility of a military draft.

Hinson acknowledged the risk of the conflict becoming a ‘political liability’ due to the loss of Iowa soldiers. ‘I’ve been to four funerals since December. It’s awful,’ she stated, highlighting the impact of the conflict on her state.

When asked about a timeline for the war, Hinson deferred to President Trump and his foreign policy team. They are currently negotiating with Iran to extend the ceasefire and discuss Iran’s nuclear program. A ceasefire has been in place since April, but skirmishes continue, affecting global oil markets due to disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Hinson emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. ‘Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. At the end of the day, that’s what I want to say on that,’ she asserted.

Regarding a potential military draft, Hinson indicated there were no such plans according to the White House. ‘We don’t need one,’ she said, expressing hope that it remains unnecessary.

Despite the ongoing conflict and its potential political fallout, Hinson noted the resolve of families of fallen Iowa soldiers. ‘Those families all said we need to finish the job,’ she remarked, acknowledging their strength in grief.

Hinson is set to compete against Democratic nominee Josh Turek for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Joni Ernst, who is not seeking re-election. The race is among several that could influence Senate control in 2026.

A spokesperson for Hinson told CBS News, ‘Of course endless wars are unpopular—no one wants them and thankfully President Trump is doing everything he can to prevent one while keeping Americans safe.’
