Biden-Era DOJ Investigation: A Legal Burden on Trump Associates
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche highlighted the vast scope of the Biden-era Department of Justice’s investigation into former President Donald Trump. Even Mar-a-Lago staffers, such as gardeners and low-level aides, had to hire criminal defense attorneys.
During an appearance on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast, Blanche described the probe’s broad reach. He referred to it as evidence of a “weaponized” justice system, saying, “Virtually anybody associated with President Trump had to get a criminal defense attorney.” He mentioned that even Trump’s Secret Service detail testified before the grand jury. All levels of his staff, including senior leadership and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, needed legal representation.
Blanche served as Trump’s lead criminal defense attorney in various cases, including the New York hush money case and those led by former special counsel Jack Smith. When asked whether the DOJ’s actions were politically motivated, Blanche said it was “weaponized in the worst way.” He noted the number of criminal defense attorneys involved in the current administration as a result.
“If you look around the room now in the Oval Office, there’s a bunch of us, a bunch of criminal defense attorneys, because of how weaponized it was,” Blanche elaborated.
Blanche explained that even former Cabinet secretaries under Trump had to retain legal counsel due to perceived targeting by the Biden administration. His remarks followed the DOJ’s decision not to proceed with a nearly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund.
The fund faced legal challenges and was part of a settlement involving Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization. It related to the release of their tax returns. At a recent House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, Blanche confirmed that the administration is not pursuing the fund, stating, “We’re not moving forward with the fund, period.”
