Knoebels Amusement Resort Offers Free Admission for Nearly a Century
Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania stands out among theme parks due to its free admission policy. Founded on July 4, 1926, Knoebels maintains this tradition as it approaches its 100th anniversary.
Originally, many early amusement parks operated in a similar manner, particularly “trolley parks” that earned revenue through ride fees and sales of food and drinks. Brian Knoebel, the current park owner, has vowed to keep this model unchanged.
“It’s who we are,” Knoebel stated. “It’s that traditional park.”
He acknowledges the joy grandparents experience watching their grandchildren enjoy the rides, emphasizing Knoebels’ hospitality towards families on limited incomes. Visitors are welcome to bring picnics, and parking is free.
Knoebels originated from a modest picnic area where visitors parked horses and buggies while enjoying the stream. Over time, amenities like picnic tables, a swimming pool, and a steam-powered carousel were introduced, marking its transformation into a full-fledged amusement park.
The park’s growth has not altered its old-fashioned charm, characterized by tree canopies, shaded paths, creekside seating, and classic attractions.Knoebels has evolved from one ride, one food stand, and a pool to 60 rides, 38 food stands, 24 games, and water slides,” said Knoebel. These expansions include an 18-hole golf course with a bar and tavern nearby.
The park prides itself on maintaining its nostalgic identity. Knoebels avoids extreme roller coasters, instead offering a blend of rides for thrill-seekers alongside traditional options.
Knoebels Amusement Resort remains the largest free-admission park in the United States, allowing visitors to pay only for the attractions they choose, reinforcing its welcoming and accessible approach to all.
