A man attempted to avoid arrest by swimming in a Central Park lake, but police detained him on Monday. This incident unfolded when New York Police Department (NYPD) officers sought to apprehend him for petty larceny in Harlem, according to NYPD statements reported by Fox News Digital.
The 23-year-old suspect evaded initial arrest efforts by fleeing from authorities into nearby Central Park and jumping into the Harlem Meer, a lake located at the park’s northeast corner. This body of water spans 11 acres.
Footage shows an NYPD helicopter hovering above as the suspect swam across the lake, attempting to reach the opposite shore.
NYPD divers entered the lake to retrieve the suspect from the water. After being brought out, the man was taken into custody. Officials transported him to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital where he remained in stable condition.
