After several months of warfare, Iranians are grappling with disillusionment and despair. The plummeting economy is affecting both pro- and anti-government citizens. For those who hoped for regime change, disappointment is intense.
Daily challenges in Iran have worsened since the conflict began. Inflation is rampant, civilian casualties are rising, and infrastructure damage is severe.
In late February, Israel and the United States launched an attack on Iran. This intervention led some Iranian regime opponents to hope an end to theocratic rule was near. However, following devastating military strikes and a fragile cease-fire, those hopes have faded. Reports indicate a civilian death toll of 1,700, alongside economic collapse causing daily hardship.
The cease-fire offered temporary respite, but tensions escalated after Iran’s new missile attacks on Israel. Iranian officials claimed these were in response to Israeli actions in Lebanon, yet fears of Israeli retaliation loom.
The economic downturn continues to worsen. Prices of basic goods have surged due to the crippling of vital industries and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil trading route. This has plunged the unstable economy further into crisis.
Uncertain peace talks and U.S. statements suggesting the war has ended, which contrasts with ongoing conflict, leave Iranians confused and anxious. Over 20 Iranians in cities such as Tehran, Isfahan, Ahvaz, and Mashhad shared their worries during interviews just before the latest strikes.
“I’m angry. I feel alone,” said Kimia, a 25-year-old designer in Tehran. “We don’t matter to the world at all; we’re viewed as mere tools for war and negotiation, but we are human beings.”
