In an appearance on CNN with Kaitlan Collins, former Republican U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized President Donald Trump and his team. She claimed that some staff members make him appear foolish by not addressing his previous statements about avoiding wars.
Greene pointed out Trump’s campaign promises to steer clear of new wars and foreign military entanglements. Her comments follow Trump’s administration increasingly justifying military actions in the Strait of Hormuz area. According to U.S. Central Command, Trump authorized self-defense strikes in response to a U.S. Apache helicopter being downed near the strategic waterway, an incident attributed to Iran by U.S. officials. Nonetheless, there is uncertainty about whether the incident was a deliberate attack or a collision with an Iranian drone. This raises questions about the circumstances leading to recent military actions.
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comments on these developments.
Key Points of Criticism
Greene’s critique is notable, as she was once one of Trump’s die-hard allies before splitting from him over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump has also criticized Greene, labeling her as “wacky.” During a past interview with ABC’s Kristen Welker, Trump was questioned about his shift from previous pledges on wars. He partially responded, “First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war, why would I have built the strongest military in the world.”
Greene emphasized that the president had consistently promised to end foreign conflicts and not participate in them. She highlighted Trump’s repeated claims about making peace deals, yet ongoing strikes between Lebanon and Israel continue. When asked about Trump’s remarks to Welker, Greene remarked on the inadequacy of Trump’s communications team. She expressed frustration over their failure to remind him of his numerous statements and promises to avoid foreign wars.
Discrepancy in Trump’s Stance
The recent retaliatory strikes spotlight a gap between Trump’s former anti-war stance and the current military actions, causing friction within his political base. Greene mentioned the internet’s permanence, with videos of Trump’s past statements widely accessible.
Updates on U.S. Military Actions
On Wednesday, CENTCOM reported on X that U.S. forces carried out additional self-defense strikes against various targets in Iran, starting around 5:15 p.m. ET. This action was in response to what they termed “unwarranted and continued aggression.” CENTCOM’s follow-up post rejected claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that commercial shipping continues in the area.
Fox News’ Trey Yingst reported that Iranian officials contacted Trump while he was in the Situation Room on Wednesday, requesting a halt to the bombing. Yingst noted that Trump responded by indicating that the strikes would soon cease.
