American Airlines Resumes Flights to Haiti
American Airlines is set to recommence its operations in Haiti. After ceasing flights more than a year ago, the airline will initiate daily nonstop flights between Miami and Cap-Haïtien starting November 1. This announcement marks a significant return, as the airline had previously provided service to Haiti for over 50 years before halting flights to Port-au-Prince in December 2024 due to safety concerns.
The Federal Aviation Administration had imposed a ban on flights to the Haitian capital following several incidents of aircraft being targeted by gunfire. American Airlines first began serving Cap-Haïtien’s international airport in 2014 after it was safe for travel. However, service was discontinued six years later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Haiti’s Prime Minister, Fils-Aimé, expressed optimism about the nation’s achievements, not only in travel but also in sports, as he mentioned during a visit to Boston for Haiti’s national soccer team’s World Cup match. This was a historic comeback to the World Cup after a 52-year absence.
American Airlines will use a Boeing 737 configured to seat 172 passengers. This includes 156 seats in the main cabin and 16 in business class. The return to Cap-Haïtien is timely, as air service to Port-au-Prince remains suspended due to ongoing violence. Previously, Spirit Airlines was the only major commercial airline flying into Cap-Haïtien before service suspensions.
Due to limited airline options, travelers to Haiti have faced increased fares. Many have relied on Haiti-based Sunrise Airways and other routes through nearby regions like the Turks and Caicos. Additionally, Zed Airlines and the Dominican Republic have recently facilitated more flights to Cap-Haïtien.
American Airlines recognized the demand in the Caribbean, noting that South Florida hosts the largest Haitian-American community. New routes to Cap-Haïtien will offer valuable connections for Haitian populations in New York City and Orlando.
Beyond Haiti, American Airlines is expanding services to Venezuela with daily nonstop flights from Miami International Airport to Maracaibo starting July 14. Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava highlighted these routes as crucial for reconnecting families and fostering economic opportunities. She emphasized Miami International Airport’s status as a leading international hub.
Nat Piepe, American Chief Commercial Officer, underscored the airline’s commitment to offering the most regional flights. The company currently services 100 destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Juan Carlos Liscano, American Senior Vice President of MIA Operations, stated that their Miami hub remains pivotal in connecting travelers to the Caribbean and Latin America, reinforcing American’s extensive network with significant returns to Haiti and increased service to Venezuela.
