Denver Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper Arrested Again for Protection Order Violation
For the second time in one week, Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper found himself in legal trouble. He was arrested following an alleged violation of a protection order, which was put in place after his earlier arrest linked to domestic violence.
Last Friday, both Cooper and his girlfriend faced arrest on charges of domestic violence. Douglas County jail records indicated they each faced two counts of domestic violence and one count of criminal mischief. The New York Post added further details, noting the protection order followed charges including felony strangulation.
A statement from the Broncos expressed disappointment over the arrest, stating they are reviewing the situation. Cooper’s on-and-off relationship with his girlfriend reportedly led to a confrontation at his residence. She accused him of infidelity, leading to an altercation where she threw his phone. After a struggle over the phone, the affidavit stated Cooper eventually recovered the device and demanded she leave his home. He allegedly threatened damage to her phone, and the affidavit, as reported by TMZ, mentioned that Cooper bit and broke her phone screen when she did not leave as he asked.
Cooper pleaded not guilty during Monday’s court proceedings. The 28-year-old player has held a position with the Broncos since they drafted him from Ohio State in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. Throughout his career with Denver, Cooper played in 81 games, recording 266 tackles and 31.5 sacks. In November 2024, the Broncos extended his contract for four years with a $60 million agreement.
