Grapes on the Green Returns for Another Summer
The once modest adults-only wine tasting event in downtown Northbrook has evolved into a cherished summer tradition. On June 20, the fourth annual Grapes on the Green will take place at Village Green Park, supported by the Village of Northbrook and the Northbrook Park District. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., adults can enjoy an evening of various wine tastings, light snacks, and live performances. Guitarist and vocalist Peter Warren will provide entertainment with his blend of jazz, bossa nova, and contemporary music.
We created this event in response to the [Northbrook] community’s desire for adults-only events, and it’s been exciting to see people respond with such enthusiasm year after year,
said Northbrook Park District Board President Mike Goodman.
As Northbrook marks its 125th anniversary, President Kathryn Ciesla emphasized that the event exemplifies community spirit. Grapes on the Green brings people together in the heart of our community,
she remarked, reflecting the village’s vibrant atmosphere.
Previous events have consistently attracted large crowds to the park at Shermer and Meadow Roads. Tasting tickets cost $49 and provide 12 one-ounce wine samplings, courtesy of Chicago Wine, a family-owned retail store. The ticket also includes a tote bag with a signature wine glass displaying the 125th anniversary logo, plus a snack box with chocolate, crackers, dried fruit, and nuts.
Mike Widmaier, alongside his wife Paula, has operated Chicago Wine for over six years, although he’s been in the industry for more than 25 years. Widmaier has participated since the inaugural 2023 event. He aims to offer a diverse range of wines, from a 2021 Torres ‘Gran Coronas’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva from Spain to a 2025 La Croix Rosé from Provence, France.
It’s just a great time, and it’s a great community event, that’s the bottom line,
Widmaier said. This year, wine selections include a sparkling rosé from California, the Mirabelle Brut Rosé, and an Italian Pinot Grigio from Elena Walch.
For those not tasting, non-tasting tickets are available for $30, still including featured items. Grapes on the Green is exclusively for adults over 21; children, pets, and outside beverages are prohibited. Due to limited seating, attendees should bring chairs or blankets.
